At less than a year old this started happening, on startup it appears to work normally, then drops to 0-1 CPM. (The unit has been on for most of this time)

Plugging the unit in starts the detections again but once the unit enters power saving mode, the detections stop.
When I take the unit out of "power saving" mode, the detections start again but taper off back to 0 not before long.

Is this how the m4011 behaves at the end of it's lifespan or am I looking at a more serious problem?
I have a TERRA-P, when that reached the end of it's life the readings were very high.

You need to check the tube voltage. If the voltage is OK, then the problem may be the tube.
