I recently bought two GMC-080 kits and have been playing around with then using the M4011 Tubes, ( I like a spare encase I break something) I connected the data port of the unit to the Mic input of an old Laptop I am using as an internet server, and was running it on battery with no problems.

When the unit ran flat, I connected the 9v Switch mode supply, and not long after things stopped working, I opened the lid and smelt that magic burning smell with a little smoke.

The laptop also runs off a 19v non earthed switch mode supply, I measured between the Mic earth and the 9V Supply earth, 80 Volts AC.
R1 on the PCB is black. From the second unit this appears to be a 50R SM Resistor, I will replace this in the next couple of days and let you know if the GMC-080 recovers or if I have really broken it.

Something to be careful of when using switch mode supplies without earthing reference.

The GMC-080 external power input voltage should not exceed the 10.5V. otherwise the battery will be over charged.
