When looking in the battery compartment of my new 300e plus I noticed that there’s some type of a black plastic cover over the GM tube, which differs from the videos I have seen when the unit is opened up that just have the glass tube uncovered, is this a new feature? |

An interesting claim, though not in agreement with physics.
Any material between tube and radioactivity source will absorb some of the radiation. Always.
The question is how much.
High energy gammas - in the MeV range - will not be absorbed by much. One may not be able to detect this little count reduction with GMC counters, unless one does a very careful, longtime measurement. But nevertheless, there is some absorption.
The story may already be different on low energy gammas, like e.g. in medical X-rays. This energy range is borderline anyway for these tubes, and any additional absorber will probably be noticeable.
One surely will see differences when looking at betas. As most sources in use by users of GMC counters, like Uranium, Thorium, Radium, Potassium radiate a significant proportion as beta, a Geiger counter user will see a count reduction when you wrap the tube with anything, be it paper or plastic or aluminum or anything else.
