So I just got my new counter, and at first things seemed good. Was getting ~20 CPM background, some tiles where hitting 35. The smoke detector was ~50. So I had it against a green bag of Late July Jalapeno Lime chips, and it was hovering around 30, and then all of a sudden the things starts going crazy and gets up to 1400 CPM and everything is beeping. See video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/k68Hhc4GTwSJ6vrQ7

I was really stating to freak out. What's weird is that I returned it back to that tile that was 35 and it started to die down to ~50.

Is this a bad sensor or do I have some kind of radiation issue in my place?

freaked out

If you can repeat the reading few times, then it could be real reading. But if it only happened once, it could be a tube issue.

I was in fact able to reproduce it twice.

If I set it against the bag like in the video after resetting it, it reads normal, around 50 ish. Then after a minute or so it goes off the chart like in the video.

I contacted support and they said they'd exchange it, lets see if it happens again with a replaced unit

Yeah looks like a tube issue. They shouldn't go crazy like that.

cool, can't wait to get the replacement. I was reading that the tube needs to be periodically quenched, perhaps that's the part that's not working?

so I reset it to factory settings, and now it's not going crazy with that same bag of chips, strange.

It was a chance. It wasn't because of the bags of chips. It probably just a noise from the tube.
