I recently started using a Geiger-Muller counter and noticed the readings can fluctuate quite a bit, even when the device is sitting in the same place. For example, I may get a fairly stable value for several minutes, then see a few higher counts before it settles down again.

I understand that background radiation naturally varies and that individual pulses are random. Still, I’m wondering how other GQ users decide whether a change in the reading is meaningful or simply normal statistical variation.

When monitoring background radiation with a GQ GM counter, do you normally use a fixed averaging period, such as 1 minute, 5 minutes, or longer? I’m particularly interested in how you compare readings taken at different times or locations without overinterpreting short spikes.

If anyone has a preferred method for recording background CPM and determining whether a change is actually significant, I’d appreciate hearing how you do it.
