I have not been able to make the motion detection on my 500+ activate the backlight.
Firmware: 2.52
Motion Detect: On Backlight & Display Mode Swivel Display: Auto Backlight Timer: 30s Power Saving: Off
With these settings, the display will correctly rotate automatically. However, after the backlight has turned off with the unit left on a stable surface, I would expect the backlight to turn on if the unit is moved. It does not. Buttons have to be pressed to turn the backlight on again. Rotating the unit does not turn on the backlight.

As it turns out, picking up the 500+ and rotating it enough to rotate the screen does cause the backlight to turn on.
I was expecting the motion-backlight feature to simply turn on the backlight when the unit is picked up or moved slightly. Is that wrong? |

Mine too. I have a GMC-500+ newly acquired and the firmware version is 2.46, but the motion detection options seems to not work.
In every configuration, nor the backlight or the screen turns on whe move the unit.
If power save is active, I need to press any button to wake up the counter. |

You need to contact support and get your update to 2.52. |

Thanks.
What are the changes between 2.46 and 2.52 versions? |

None of that turns on the backlight. I can pick the unit up and put it back down without the backlight being turned on. ONLY when I flip the unit, causing the display to rotate, does the backlight come on automatically due to accelerometer input.
The accelerometer itself seems to be operating normally. I think this is a software bug.
Also, the accelerometer really should be referred to by that name in the menus. Gyroscope is not accurate. |

It is designed to not trigger with just moving it. |

So it's only designed to turn on the backlight when the display rotates? That isn't particularly useful or convenient which is the whole point of the motion detection backlight feature isn't it?
As it is in firmware 2.52, the Motion Detection feature does nothing at all unless screen rotation is also turned on. That makes no sense. I don't want my screen to rotate, but I would like the backlight to be enabled by the accelerometer which is intuitive.
I might suggest that a more useful Motion Detection mode would be turn on the backlight with some rotation threshold on any axis. Something like 15-30 degrees would probably work. That would avoid turning on the backlight for simple vibrations, but wouldn't require a full screen rotation to turn the backlight on. The user could then turn on the backlight by picking up the unit and tilting it a bit. Screen rotation (swivel) would not even need to be enabled to implement this motion backlight feature in a more intuitive way. |
