Posted - 04/29/2019 : 17:33:24 It is known that some gas mantles are radioactive. I managed to found some of them, however, as I searched lately, those are doped with Thorium dioxide. The mantles are in a sealed plastic bag, and with GMC-300E+ 4.50 measures 660 to 780 average CPM. If I separate the counter, more than 2 or 3 cm, it decreases drastically.
Few doubts I have:
1. With plastic bag, filters out all alpha particles?, next 2. With same above, but now wrapped with aluminum foil, should block beta particles right?, and 3. All above plus a steel sheet of 0.8 ~ 1.0 mm, must block alpha and beta particles and only pass gamma rays?
Should I still keep them in their bags or it is needed more shielding?
I will provide photos if needed, any foreword is welcome meanwhile.

I think you can keep them with the plastic bag but don't put them close to you or someone else.
