Hi!

I have a GMC-200 counter, and the USB cable from GQ electronics. Hooked up to the software (and the Rad software from Black Cat software) I get stable background readings,in agreement with another geiger counter I have.

BUT: When I put the counter on top of my test source ( a sample of euxenite, measuring 50 µSv/h with my other counter) the CPM first rises but then drops to zero, after which not even background counts are recognized. However, the meter "ticks" a lot on my test source, and not so much away from the source (background).

So, it appears that the gamma rays are counted by the tube properly, but there is some problem in interpreting the signal in the computer, as it "saturates" and dies as soon as the counts go up considerably.

Is there some problem with the COM port settings? What are the correct settings in the software/in the device manager?

What can be the problem? Any input is appreciated!

Karl

You do not need to set the comport parameters except COMPORT number. The default BAUD RATE should be 57600

As far as CPM are concerned they are around 30-40

The meter reads the background fine, as the values I get is in good agreement with 2 other geiger counters.

Also, I get the exact same problem with another software, so that is why i was asking about the COM port settings.

What are the correct settings?

It seems the Geiger Counter unit is working fine.

The computer software may need some adjustment.

What is CPM you got? If the CPM is correct, then the software needs to change the calibration value.
