The US military surplus 6107/BS212 mica end window geiger tube works great in the GMC-280 geiger kit. Note the hole I drilled in the top half of the case to allow Alpha particles/Beta radiation to reach the geiger tube's mica end window!

Thanks! I think this 6107/BS212 tube came from an internet tube seller and cost around $12.00 USD. I also bought one on ebay for maybe around $40.00?? I am not using any screen, just the hole drilled in the case. If you want there is a nice USSR end window tube sometimes on ebay, a SBT-9 or maybe you can find a 6107/BS212. I tested the SBT-9 and the 6107/BS212 and both work great with the GMC-280 and both fit in the case too. I did have to unsolder and move the tube clips, solder wires to the new clip locations and drill the hole in the case, not too hard to do!

Where did you get the tube?
Have you put a protective screen over the hole and if so, what mesh and how much attenuation did it introduce?

I'm using an Am241 source from a smoke detector to generate Alpha particles (radiation). The 6107/BS212 geiger tube (and GMC-280) go completely nuts when the Am241 is brought near, but all Alpha can blocked with a sheet of paper in front of the hole I drilled in the GMC-280's case! Kinda cool! |
