I just bought a Soeks 01m geiger counter with a SBM-20 Tube I want to replace this with a much more sensitive tube and I think that the M4011 tube is the one to do this with. Living on the west coast, I have had issues with radioactive exposure from foods (baby went to hospital with nasty stomach bleeding from consumed milk, better now without drinking store-bought fresh milk)According to geiger gurus, SBM-20 tube is not sensitive enough for casual food testing. I did see a video where someone was using a Soeks 01m in a grocery store for checking vegetables and it did show that the green leaf produce was hot. I have to know if the food I'm buying my children is contaminated quickly while shopping, I saw another video where a M4011 was used and recommended for this type of testing, and I think the sensitivity of the M4011 tube should do the trick based upon his results. However I need to know If I can just drop it in there or is there a resistor I would have to solder in series to adjust for the possible voltage difference and if so what would you suggest? Any and all help will be examined, thank you.

You can look up food testing on the google. As far as I know even extremely small amount of radioactive contamination can causes adverse health effects when digested, so there's no hand held GM tube that can pick it up. Even laboratories test from contentrated ashes of samples (dry material content). By the time the GM tube shows something it is possibly lethal. Which still means that it is worth to check, but you do have to make other measures especially to protect your baby. Contact me if you need some details about radioprotective diet or lifestyle chris. I dont want to expand on it here but I want to help your little one.

I see that page.

I think the tube sensitivity testing involves more than one factors. Not just drop-in test.

I do not think the M4011 will be worse if you replace SBM-20.

You can just add another SBM-20 to increase the reading. But it may not help much to increase the sensitivity. For example, if both tubes have 0.1eMv sensitivity, then even you put two tubes, it still not be able to detect < 0.1eMv level. But once the level reaches >0.1eMv, the reading will be doubled.

so what do you think, if I use a M4011 tube vs an SBM-20 it would appear it would have a lower sensitivity than the SBM-20, so worse? there's someone on Ebay selling the M4011 who has a claim to higher sensitivities and a geiger guru stated that the M4011 tube is the one he uses for testing vegetables on the west coast.

Can I simply add another SBM-20 to the geiger to increase sensitivity without wrecking the geiger counter? Can it power 2 tubes do ya think?

seems like an unbiased study.

Not sure how you compared the sensitivity between those two tubes got the result. Try to adjust the voltage and it shoud adjust the sensitivity.

Place two tubes in parallel will help on reading for sure. The reading should X2 in that case. But two same tubes should works better than two different tubes. Because different tubes have different working condition.

whoah nm, the m4011 looks to be a direct voltage operated replacement for the SBM-20, HOWEVER- according to one test done it is less sensitive than the SBM-20. I wonder if you could hook up two of these in parallel to increase sensitivity?

Parameters: SBM-20
Minimum Anode Resistor (meg ohm): 1.0
Recommended Anode Resistor (meg ohm): 5.1
Recommended Operating Voltage (volts) : 400
Operating Voltage Range (volts): 350 - 475

M4011
Working Voltage: 380-450V
Working Current: 0,015-0,02 mA
Sensivity to Gamma Radiation: 0.1 MeV
Own Background: 0,2 Pulses/s
Working Temperature Range: -50 +60 Ñ
