For more than two decades, Skype has been a global symbol of online communication. From international calls to video chats with friends, Skype revolutionized how people stayed in touch. But in May 2025, Microsoft will officially retire Skype and transition users to Microsoft Teams (free)—ushering in a new era of unified communication and collaboration.

Why Microsoft Is Retiring Skype
The evolution of technology has changed how we interact. Today’s users expect tools that do more than just support messaging or calling—they want flexible, integrated platforms that combine video, chat, file sharing, scheduling, and community features. Microsoft Teams offers all of that, making it the natural next step for Skype’s user base.

Microsoft has seen tremendous growth in Teams’ usage. In the past two years alone, consumer users have spent four times more time in Teams meetings, reflecting how people now prefer a single, all-in-one tool for both personal and professional interactions.

If you or a loved one still relies on Skype for international calls, now’s the perfect time to Buy Skype Prepaid Gift Cards before paid services phase out.

What Skype Users Need to Know
As part of this change, Microsoft is offering two main options for Skype users:

Switch to Teams (free):
Starting now, Skype users—especially those in Insider programs—can log into Microsoft Teams using their existing Skype credentials. When they do, all chats and contacts will automatically sync, making the transition smooth. For a time, Skype and Teams users will also be able to message and call each other, ensuring no one gets left behind.

Export your data:
If you prefer not to switch, Microsoft gives you the option to export your Skype data. This includes chats, call history, and contacts. Skype will remain fully functional until May 5, 2025, so there’s still time to decide.

What Happens to Skype Credit and Subscriptions?
As Microsoft focuses on Teams, paid Skype features will no longer be available to new customers. However, existing users can continue using their Skype Credit and subscriptions until the end of their current billing cycle. Even after Skype retires, remaining paid users can still access the Skype Dial Pad from the web portal or within Teams to make calls using leftover credit.

If you still have Skype Credit or are considering giving someone the gift of global calling, now’s the time to act.

Want to keep communicating while Skype is still active?

The Future with Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams isn’t just a replacement—it’s an upgrade. With powerful collaboration tools, built-in calendar features, file sharing, and the ability to build or join communities, Teams is already being used by hundreds of millions of people globally.
