I'm a new (and unsophisticated user). I had my GMC-800 for about a week, and it seemed to work fine. Then all of a sudden, when I turned it on it started reading incorrect, very lethal (100,000+ CPM) doses on start-up where background reading before was 15-25 CPM. I don't know if I bumped into another mode or something, but it's clearly not working correctly.

I have done a factory reset numerous times with no effect. The device has not been in contact with any radioactive material.

Switch off "FET" and try again. Switching off means setting FET=60.
