I have a less amusing remark about GQ and their devices, I looked at the availability of the microcontroller they use (the STM32F103RCT6): with the shortage of component and the current problems, it is not available anywhere and without a public date planned for restocking. maybe GQ has a strategic stock? or priority resources? so maybe is a good idea to fall back on the fashion and hats market? they are well their little hats to the lady and her cat. |

Oh, that's an interesting twist on the supply chain issue. The Wifi enabled counters all seem to use an ESP8266 microcontroller in addition to the main one. Could you look up the availability of this one too?

the chip itself (ESP8266) is available 18000 stock at Digikey (this is a normal gauge). therefore the assembled modules must also be available.

about STM32F103RCT6, on the ST site they say "No availability of distributors reported", by checking with the largest official distributors we do not find any (Arrow, Farnell, Digikey, Mouser, RS, Future). But on aliexpress you can find STM32F103RCT6 supposedly in stock, I'm not sure it's true and original parts from ST. But... |

@Ullix but the ESP is only used for Wifi only, and does nothing else with/to the system...
IMHO the need of searching another microprocessor offers new ways; like getting rid of "USB to serial", and other issues with the devices... (yes one can dream. btw the tinfoil-hats are too expensive. ;) |

@the_mike: True, the ESP8266 in a GMC counter is acting as nothing but a WiFi-modem. But looking up the specs of the STM32F103RCT6 I'd say the ESP8266 could replace this arm processor and still do WiFi.
However, the ESP8266 is old. Today one would use an ESP32-S3 or -C3, if not an ESP-32, and have WiFi and even Bluetooth for free.
For GQ it would likely be saving money at better performance. Who knows, they might even throw in an Alu-hat for free? |

@ullix, basically you are right ESP32 chips are made to be able to be autonomous and host an application. at 1.12€ the chip for the biggest it is certainly interesting. after in terms of reliability, it is to be seen, some chips are more reliable than others. for a master chip it is important that it is very reliable and well secured so as not to turn into a brick, a simple watchdog timer is not enough. for a slave chip, it's not a problem because it can be reseted by the master. maybe it's reliable enough, maybe not. but in principle it is true that it seems interesting, and above all available. |

what would be nice is to add the breathalyzer function to the geiger counters. As some people do to start their cars, to unlock the screen saver you would have to blow into the reader. it will avoid problems with drones.
PS: idem to geigerlog and other GM utilities. |

well seen, that's it, he got there. after having rotted the forum on the GMC it will rot that of the EMF. he does not sulk his pleasure. |
